ANNOUNCEMENT
Christopher
Kane, M.D., F.A.C.S., a nationally recognized researcher
and specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate
and kidney cancer has been recruited as the new Chief of Urology
at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center
and Moores UCSD Cancer Center.
"Dr.
Kane's recruitment to UC San Diego Medical Center represents
the university's next step in developing a comprehensive world-class
cancer center in Southern California," said Mark A. Talamini,
M.D., Professor and Chair of Surgery at UCSD Medical Center.
"Chris Kane is a true physician-scientist whose discoveries
will be applied at the bedside of our cancer patients, and
will lead to better treatment for all patients seeking innovative
care options."
A
leader in minimally-invasive surgical techniques such as robotics
and laparoscopic procedures, Kane is the former Vice Chair
of Urology at the University of California, San Francisco
where he was also a member of the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer
Center, Director of the Urologic Oncology Fellowship, and
Chief of Urology of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center San
Francisco. Kane is also a highly decorated Naval Officer,
who served as Battalion Surgeon for 3d Battalion, 12th Marine
Regiment in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait during Operation Desert
Shield and Desert Storm receiving multiple military awards.
Kane
has an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from
the University of California, Davis and received his medical
degree from the F.
Edward Hebert School of Medicine at the Uniformed Services
University of the Health Sciences. He received his General
Surgery training at the University of California Davis East
Bay Surgery program where he was selected the Outstanding
Surgical Intern. He completed his Urology residency at Oakland
Naval Hospital and the Urology Department at UCSF.
Kane
has authored or co-authored over 120 publications and book
chapters. He is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Urology,
the American Journal of Urology Review and American Journal
of Oncology Review. He is an active member of numerous professional
medical societies including the American Urological Association,
the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Urologic
Oncology, the Society of Endourology and is on the GU Core
of the Cancer and Leukemia Group B.

Dear Colleague:
I am pleased to introduce Roger Sur, MD, as the newest faculty
member of the Division of Urology at UC San Diego. Dr. Sur
joins the UC San Diego Medical Center to launch the UCSD Comprehensive
Kidney Stone Center. The center is dedicated to the surgical
treatment and medical prevention of both routine and complex
kidney stones, as well as research into the cause, prevention,
and treatment of kidney stone disease.
Dr. Sur's exhaustive training includes a medical degree from
Eastern Virginia Medical School and surgical and urology residencies
at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. He completed a two-year
endourology/laparoscopy fellowship at Duke University, where
he gained extensive experience in the surgical and medical
management of complex kidney stones under the direction of
Dr. Glenn Preminger. He went on to serve as program director
of a urologic oncology fellowship for the National Cancer
Institute and National Naval Medical Center. He also practiced
at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC.
Dr. Sur's goal is to collaborate with local physicians in
caring for patients with a broad range of complex kidney stone
disease (e.g., staghorn kidney calculi, urinary diversion
calculi, bladder calculi, and ureteral strictures). Dr. Sur
has performed more than 500 noinvasive endoscopic kidney stone
procedures, including shock wave lithotripsy, ureteroscopy,
and percutaneous nephrolithotomy. He has also performed more
than 200 laparoscopic and robotic surgeries.
Dr. Sur sees patients at the urology clinic at the UC San
Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest. He welcomes patient consultations
