WHO ATTENDED

Speaker: C. Lowell Parsons, M.D., Professor of Surgery/Urology, University of California, San Diego
Topic: "Leading Patients on the Journey to Interstitial Cystitis Relief"

Dr. C. Lowell Parsons diagnoses and treats all urologic disorders, and specializes in caring for patients who have interstitial cystitis (IC). Internationally recognized as a leading physician and researcher in IC, he has developed major new diagnostic tools and treatments for the disease and has published over 200 medical journal articles and textbook chapters. Health care professionals from around the world have visited his clinic and attended his lectures to learn the latest techniques for detecting and treating IC.

At his clinic at UCSD, Dr. Parsons has treated more than 6000 patients who have IC. His UCSD laboratories pursue a number of research studies aimed at identifying the causes of IC and finding effective new treatments for it.

The innovative IC treatments available in Dr. Parsons’ UCSD clinic include multi-modal oral treatment plans tailored for each individual patient to achieve relief of symptoms and to prevent disease progression. For treatment of IC, Dr. Parsons’ clinic also offers intraurethral and intravesical instillations of new medications.

Dr. Parsons is certified by the American Board of Urology. In addition to all of the standard urologic procedures, Dr. Parsons has special training and experience in performing extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) for stones in the urinary tract and cryosurgery for carcinoma of the prostate. Dr. Parsons and Dr. Joseph D. Schmidt, Professor Emeritus and former Head of the UCSD Division of Urology, rank among the world leaders in experience with prostate cryosurgery and in contributions to the refinement of the technique.
